Seattle, USA. Global trade of wood chips rose on average by four percent per year from 2004 to 2008 to a record 32 million tonnes last year. This upward trend was broken in 2009 with the trade is down 26% during the first half of the year compared to 2008. The decline in shipments was the direct result of the global financial crisis and declining demand for paper products in the world. This year, only 25 million tonnes of wood chips will be shipped worldwide, which is the lowest volume since 2002. Japanese pulp mills are still the main destination for vessels of chips in the world, the country imported 53% of wood chips in global stock and 15% softwood chips. Other countries in Asia, including China, Taiwan and South Korea, accounted for 12% of world imports, while the Nordic countries imported 14% of chips exchanged this year. The biggest plunge in shipments was that the wood chips in Japan. During the first six months, the country imported 34% less chips than the same period last year, with the biggest drop being that of softwood chips. Virtually all major importing countries have reduced their purchases this year. The only countries that have increased their reliance on imports of wood fibers are Turkey (softwood), China (deciduous), Sweden (deciduous) and Portugal (deciduous). Countries that have reduced most of the exports in 2009 are Australia, South Africa, Vietnam and Uruguay. Australia's leading exporter in the world, has reduced deliveries from 3. 1 million tons last year 1H 2. 3 million tonnes during the same period this year, reports the market report Wood Resource Quarterly. Uruguay has reduced exports by 65% this year, while shipments from South Africa decreased by 40%. With the production of pulp increased slowly this fall, and energy companies across Europe in search of new sources of woody biomass, it is likely that trade with wood chips will increase in the coming year. March 16-17, 2010, the 4th World Conference of wood fiber: trade in wood chips and biomass will be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The conference will focus on market development of wood chips in the world, European demand for pellets and biomass chips, the outlook for plantation wood chip supply, costs and ocean freight price trends for wood chips. After the conference, there will be a two-day trip to visit the plantations and export chip. For more information, please go to www. pulpwoodconference. com Contact> Resources LLC wooden
